POUGHKEEPSIE – Last season took the Warriors four games to get in the win column; but that was then and, as they say, this is now. While starting a relatively young team with two seniors, a freshman and a sophomore, Lourdes battled Lincoln to a 53-50 win on its home court.
“I was very pleased with tonight’s effort given the youth of our team. “, said Lourdes head coach Jim Santoro. “We made a ton of “freshmen” mistakes but executed on both ends of the court when we needed to.”
Sean Lee, the freshman of the starting five finished with 12 points, only second to Tanner Broughton who hand a big hand in bringing Lourdes to the promised land. Broughton scored 10 of his team high 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Lourdes took a 14-11 lead after the first quarter, but George Siegrist and Pat Murray both picked up two early fouls and when the Warriors were forced to go to the bench early, Lincoln capitalized with a run and gun style that Lourdes had a hard time keeping up with. Lincoln led 28-23 at halftime and scored the first four points of the third quarter to enjoy a nine point lead.
Coach Santoro switched to a zone defense and from there Lourdes went on a 13-0 run to regain the lead.
There were several lead changes in the fourth quarter, with Lincoln leading by two with just over a minute remaining but a pivotal point came when Lourdes was bringing the ball up the court and tripped at mid-court. George Siegrist had the presence of mind to signal a time out while diving to the ground, preserving possession for the Warriors and escaping a crucial turnover.
Off the inbound, Broughton hit a pivotal three that gave Lourdes the lead for good. George Siegrist scored on a breakaway off another Lourdes inbound and the Warriors get in the win column right away this season.
Lourdes hits the road to play Pearl River next Friday. Lincoln will participate in the Briarcliff Tournament beginning Thursday.
