PELHAM – What a difference a year makes. Last season, the Lourdes boys basketball team was struggling with a very young team; this year the team is still young but senior leadership with two seniors is always better than one. In Lourdes 68-64 win over Pelham Monday night, the Warriors were led by both seniors Tanner Broughton and George Siegrist. Junior forward Ryan Selander missed the action due to a sprained ankle.
Broughton led Lourdes with 20 points, while Siegrist had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
After Pelham ran up a 12-4 run to take a 18-11 lead after the first quarter, Broughton led a phenomenal second quarter scoring exhibition that included four three pointers by the senior. The Warriors outscored their opponent 27-8 in that second quarter. Lourdes led 38-27 at halftime.
The game tightened up late in the 4th quarter, after Pelham switched to a full court zone and at times, man to man press.
“The one thing I am most pleased with at this point is the adjustments our guys are making defensively.”, said Lourdes head coach Jim Santoro. “They are starting to show a real understanding of what we need to do.”
George Siegrist led the defensive attack, taking a charge in the the first half that really set the tone for the Warriors.
“George was an all around leader tonight. We have talked about how he can lead without scoring a point. Tonight he did both. Something that is needed with such a young group.”, added Santoro.
Ben Bullock chipped in with 11 points including seven points in the fourth quarter , going a perfect five for five from the free throw line.
Lourdes is home Thursday and Friday with games against John Jay Cross River and North Rockland.
