FREEDOM PLAINS – Two evenly matched teams met for the Class AA Sectional Championship at Arlington High School Sunday morning, and to emphasize just how evenly matched Arlington and North Rockland are, both teams came in undefeated, both teams played to a 2-2 OT tie in the regular season and both played to another overtime on this day before Arlington came out victorious with a 3-1 win.
“We knew they weren’t going to back down,” said Arlington senior midfielder Kendall Feighan, “They played us to overtime last time and we knew we just had to score first”.
The games started out with a scoreless first half but with several close calls for goals. Both Cassie Coster and Nicole Solicito came up with multiple dramatic saves in the first half. “We pumped Cassie up and told her she was going to have to have some pretty big saves”, said Arlington head coach Kelley Hand, “And she really did. I’m so happy for her”.
In the second half, Arlington’s Kendall Feighan backed up her thought and found the back of the net when Solicito came out for the block and left Feighan with an unattended goal for the first score of the game.
With a little more than nine minutes remaining in regulation, Arlington got called for a penalty, resulting in a direct kick for North Rockland’s Jenna MacMillian. MacMillian drilled it just below the cross bar to tie the game at 1-1.
The game was forced to overtime with two 10 minute halves, tied at 1-1.
In the first 10 minutes, Kelly Coppola received a pass just right of the goal and when Solicito came out to defend, Coppola slipped it by her to the far post, making it a 2-1 game. In the second OT, Sofia Germano made the most of a ball that came loose from a group of offensive and defensive players and drilled it to the back of the net for a 3-1 Arlington win.
This is the third year in a row that the Admirals girls soccer team has won the Sectional Championship. Arlington will face Section 9 winner Monroe-Woodbury in the first round of the Regionals on Tuesday at Arlington High School. Arlington beat MW earlier in the season 3-1 back on September 15th.
