Poughkeepsie High School Basketball Standout Shot

Second Poughkeepsie basketball player victim of gun violence in the city.

POUGHKEEPSIE – A Poughkeepsie High School student was shot early Wednesday morning in the city of Poughkeepsie. The victim has been identified as Poughkeepsie basketball standout Marvin Lunsford, as confirmed by Hudson Valley Sports Report.

Police would not identify the wounded man other than to say he was an 18-year old city of Poughkeepsie student, but HVSR confirmed separately that the victim was indeed the Pioneer star.

He was shot once in the neck and had surgery Wednesday. He is recovering and expected to survive the gunshot wound.

Lunsford, who will be a senior in the fall, is the second Poughkeepsie player to be shot in the last year and a half. Caval Haylett Jr. was shot and killed in March, 2016, on Winnikee Avenue in the city of Poughkeepsie.

Lunsford was a standout guard for the Pioneers this past season. He was named honorable mention All-State by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Police are asking the public for any tips, information or video by calling 845-451-7577.
