FREEDOM PLAINS – The Haldane girls soccer team is back in the New York State Final Four tournament after a 3-1 overtime win over Millbrook Wednesday at the neutral site of Arlington high school.
The Blazers scored first, but the Blue Devils scored three unanswered goals for the win. The first came goal of the game came when Millbrook’s Arianna Radovic hit the far post fro the left side of the goal.at the 17 minute mark of the first half.
That goal held through the first half giving Millbrook a nil lead at halftime.
The Blue Devils were relentless in the second half, peppering Millbrook with shots on Claire Martell in goal until Lily Westerhuls found the back of the net at the 74 minute mark to tie the game at 1-1. Without a score in the last six minutes of the game, the Class C Regional final was going to overtime.
Haldane carried its momentum into the overtime period with more shots on goal in the first 10 minute overtime period but Millbook’s defense and Martell withstood the barrage.
In the second 10 minute overtime period, Haldane’s freshman sensation, Westerhul finally broke through after 7 minutes had past giving the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead.
Jackie Villella scored one more time for Haldane with one minute remaining to give Haldane the 3-1 overtime win.
Martell finished the game with 20+ saves
NOTE: Typically, the winner of this Regional quarterfinal would face a Section 8 or Section 11 team from Long Island, but because there is not a LI representative in Class C this year, Haldane is sent to the head of the class and will play in the NYS Final Fours at SUNY Cortland on November 10th.
